Aaronel and the Olympus C2020Z
The digital camera revolution and the rush for more megapixels and features was in full bloom in the early 2000’s. In the fall of 2002 Canon announced the 11 megapixel EOS-1Ds, the first digital SLR with a sensor that captured a full 35 mm frame. Having worked extensively with film cameras, with an emphasis on black and white infrared photography, Aaronel was eager to embrace the new technology. When I started working for Aaronel in 2002, she had already been using the two megapixel Olympus C-2020Z for years.
The 2020 was unique in that it did not contain an infrared cutoff filter like most of the other digital cameras on the market. So with the use of an R-72 filter, infrared light could be passed to the sensor. The results were striking, with cyan and magenta as the predominate colors in a seemingly black and white image.
To be sure the 2020 had its restrictions, from a slight shutter lag, long write times to the SmartMedia card and unexpected shifts in color. Additionally the R-72 is a dense filter and required a lot of light or a tripod. No matter, Aaronel would power thru these limitations shooting mostly hand held in order to capture her rapid discerning vision. Later in the office, she would direct her team to produce prints that refined and enhanced her ideas.
