Curated by Brittany Reilly and Alex J. Taylor

In the mid-to-late twentieth century, geometrical abstraction often echoed the standardized patterns and processes of industrial production. Wavelengths reveals how four artists — Aaronel deRoy Gruber (1918–2011), Josefa Filkosky (1933–1999), Sue Fuller (1914–2006), and Jane Haskell (1923–2013) — used these simple forms to generate exuberant visual effects. Connected to Pittsburgh’s modernist scene, each artist drew upon the region’s industrial resources for inspiration and expertise. Whether working in the studio or with fabricators, they made the forms of the factory their own. Their bold compositions seem to swoop, swell, and radiate, propelled into space by a sense of dynamic energy and optimism.
